From Queensland, to Tassie to the North Island, no matter what part of Australia or New Zealand you live in, we can bet there’s a cracking walking trail for you out there. Whether you are a beginner or expert – we’ve broken down some of our favourite local walking trails from Mt Coot-tha to One Tree Hill and everything in between.

NSW

Blue Mountains

Less than an hour from Sydney, the Blue Mountains region has plenty to offer all levels of walking difficulty.

If you’re looking for an easy trail, we like the 5km Charles Darwin Walking Track. Take in the gorgeous streams and grasslands of The Blue Mountains.

For the more ambitious walkers, with views of the Wentworth Falls, the Wentworth Pass is a steeper 7.3KM track featuring metal ladders and even some scrambling!

QLD

Summit Track – Mt Coot-tha

Just 15 mins drive west of the Brisbane CBD, lies the Mt Coot-tha Reserve and Forest park. The summit gives you glorious views of the CBD and Moreton Bay areas. Discover carved out trails for beginners to bushland adventuring for more advanced walkers. There is something for everyone. The rooftop restaurant at the summit is highly recommended, should you want to spend longer taking in the beautiful surroundings.

Lake Manchester Loop

Part of Brisbane Forest Park, The Lake Manchester Loop is a clockwise track around Lake Manchester that takes around 4 hours. A moderate to intermedia trail with varying elevation, located just 30 mins west of Brisbane – the park makes an easy day trip. Be sure to set off early to make the most of it!

VIC

Dandenong Ranges

The beauty of the Dandenong ranges is second to none, and as a bonus there is a walk to suit every level of walking ability. From the idyllic pace of the Botanic Gardens to the tougher terrain of the Bunyip Park Nature Walk – their large variation of walking trails is the reason Melbourne locals keep coming back to the Dandenong Ranges again and again.

Macedon Ranges

Ideal for all skill levels, the Macedon Ranges walking trail circuit is just 8KM long and even offers walkers the chance to spot local wildlife. This is an ideal walk for families and couples as it’s extremely versatile. Although the trails can get busy, the Ranges make for an ideal Sunday afternoon trip out of Melbourne

WA

Bells Rapids River Walk

North-East of Perth, the Bells Rapids Park offer beginner to intermediate trails of around 3-5km. The well-marked paths make for a popular destination for families, and it’s dog friendly to boot!

Beenyup Swamp Circuit

Close to Joondalup, the Yellagonga Regional Park is home to the Beenyup Swamp Circuit, a 2.4km crcuit around the Beenyup Swamp. Perfect for those with young families, this trail is also suitable for taking prams. Kick back, and enjoy a quiet afternoon walk.

ACT

One Tree Hill

For spectacular views across the ACT and beyond, One Tree Hill is a must. Although, we’d advise it’s for more intermediate or advanced walkers, it’s great for couples or solo walkers. Covering around 8Km this is a gorgeous winding loop. The views are not just confined to the summit either, One Tree Hill boasts stunning panorama throughout most of the trail.

NT

Litchfield National Park

Around an hour’s drive south of Darwin lies Litchfield National Park. Bursting with walks, get acquainted with Litchfield’s huge choice of Waterfalls, Creeks and Bushwalks. A particular favourite of ours is the Wangi Falls, a simple 3km loop that includes a treetop viewing platform. This trail is perfect for families as the man made walking platform make it easy to get around.

In the North West of Tasmania lies the Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park and the Dove Lake Circuit Walk. Mostly flat with limited elevation this trail is best suited for beginner to intermediate walkers. The Rangitoto Summit Track, is just 25km drive from Auckland. This is a 7km trail that includes a dormant volcano and stunning views of the city. One for the family, this is a simple walking trail suited to beginners with a quality payoff. Feeling adventurous? Check out the Lava Caves on the way down!
