If kids are not participating in weekend sports or other types of exercise outside of school hours, PE classes become even more important. For younger kids and teenagers, this is a vital stage of both mental and physical development. Habits and learnings that they will development at this point of their life will often transfer into adulthood, so it is important that they soak up as much information and form as many positive, healthy habits as possible.

What do students do in High School PE classes?

Unlike primary school, PE classes in high school are more of a balance between physical exercise and theory. Each week there will be designated classes focused solely on theory, and classes where students will play games like netball or athletics, and participate in some basic fitness testing.

Just like Maths and English classes, students will have tests and exams as part of the curriculum. Should students choose to continue with PE classes as their education progresses, their PE study scores will contribute to their end of year high school study scores.

Some students may have certain physical limitations that may affect their ability to fully participate in some classes, so it is important to alert any teachers and staff about any considerations and adjustments that need to be made to their classes.

Tips for parents

Healthy habits are built in the home, no matter how good a high school’s PE program may be. Do your best to ensure your child has a nutritious, balanced diet that gives them every chance to succeed in the classroom and their physical education.

When your kids start high school, and eventually become teenagers, it may be time to take a small step back. Allow them room to grow and develop their own likes, dislikes and habits. Be there to guide them as needed, encouraging them to make exercise a priority throughout their week, even if it just a walk around the block each evening.

Provide them with appropriate sports clothing and footwear to ensure that they will enjoy their PE classes with the comfort and support they need.
